American Language
Published in Hardcover by Random House (January, 1900)
Author: Henry L. Mencken
Average review score:

Word-Nerds come find your fodder.
We all knew Mencken was a master of wit, but little did we know that his mastery of words could also be introspective to the language itself. As a linguistics major, I found this tome extremely interesting. If you want meticulous detail on the historyu and the divergence from the British English, snap this book up. If you're still not satisfied, hunt around for the appedices he wrote later in his life.

The American Language: An Inquiry into the Development of English in the United States
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1977)
Authors: Henry Louis Mencken, David W. Maurer, and Raven I. McDavid
Average review score:

Entertaining and edifying!!
Mencken provides a look at our impossible language with great flair, erudition, and with a liberal dollop of humor. Here is a spendid book that you can read systematically cover-to-cover or pick up and read in bits and pieces. It covers the development of our language both topically and historically.

This volume is absolutely indispensible for both the amateur logophile and the scholar of the English language. I recommend it very highly! It is incredible fun to read!

Analysis of Observed Chaotic Data
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (June, 1996)
Authors: Henry D. I. Abarbanel, M. E. Gilpin, and M. Rotenberg
Average review score:

Simply pure scientific writing
It's probably the best-written book i've read so far: it's what i call scientific writing. No approximate statement, every concept is provided with a discussion of what it can be used for and what it cannot. There is no tedious statement like the one you see in many science books where the theory is simply given without any mention of the underlying hypothesis making it useless in practice...time series analysts should know what i'm talking about...

Of course, reading this book when you don't have any interest in time series analysis is probably a bad idea since you need quite a strong background in classical time series analysis techniques (time as well as frequency domain).

The Analysis of Variance
Published in Paperback by Wiley-Interscience (19 February, 1999)
Author: Henry Scheffé
Average review score:

The Analysis of Variance
This is an elegant and well-written classic. Scheffe's proofs are clear and straightforward, without being too terse. His use of orthogonal bases for vector spaces makes proofs of independence and derivations of distributions easy to understand. _The Analysis of Variance_ has definitely stood the test of time.

DO YOU STUDY HIEROGLYPHS? BUY IT
Yes, buy this small but interesting book written by two of the most reknown Egyptologists of our times. It deals with matters of epigraphic nature and how to record ancient texts (especially, "monumental" hieroglyphic writing). To sum up: Buy it!

Ancient Records of Egypt: The Eighteenth Dynasty
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd) (May, 2001)
Authors: James Henry Breasted and Peter A. Piccione
Average review score:

excellent
These volumes, written by a distinguished American Egyptologist, were first published in 1906 and 1907. In his introduction to this re-edition, Egyptologist Peter Piccione provides a short biography of the author as well as a historical account of the 5 tomes. Volume 1 discusses the First through the Seventeenth Dynasties; Volume 2, the Eighteenth Dynasty; Volume 3, the Nineteenth Dynasty; and Volume 4, the Twentieth through Twenty-Sixth Dynasties. Volume 5 contains supplementary bibliographies and indices for the previous volumes; Piccione has added a more recent bibliography that proves to be quite useful. Each book offers a description of texts along with comments on historicity and significance, before continuing onto easy-to-understand translations. Many of the texts included are never-before-seen passages, while others are quite popular: the Palermo Stone, Letter of Pepi II, Tale of Sinuhe, Tomb of Rekhmire, Capture of Kadesh, Papyrus Harris, Adoption Stela of Nitocris, and so on. This is the most complete, easy-to-consult translation of Egyptian historical texts ever available in the field of Egyptology. A highly recommended resource for students and scholars.

And the Goat Cried: Southern Tales and Other Chance Meetings
Published in Paperback by Creative Arts Book Co (01 November, 1997)
Authors: Henry A. Buchanan and Susan Sammons
Average review score:

The Goat Cried
A collection of Southern folk tales reminscent of John Steinbeck's style. The stories are deeply rooted in the Southern tradition of family life, discipline and the morals of country living which are virtually non-existent. An excellent example of morality dependent upon the situation the character is living.

Highly recommended for lovers of Southern humor and morality.
